The Hydrocarbon Reservoir Characterization Group (RCG) is overseen by the New York State Museum.

Mission

RCG is, in part, responsible for providing access to all publicly available New York State oil and gas well-related data. This is done primarily through the Empire State Oil and Gas Information System (ESOGIS) esogis.nysm.nysed.gov.

RCG also performs and promotes research in New York State, emphasizing the potential for oil and gas development and storage, carbon sequestration, and geo-thermal applications.

RCG employs ArcGIS, GeoGraphix and Petra to facilitate documentation of its research projects. RCG works closely with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to ensure that data is accurate and up-to-date. A portion of the funding required to support RCG's research efforts is provided by NYSERDA.

Other Services

RCG is also called upon to provide custom maps, talks, and presentation materials for educational and research purposes.
