About The Empire State Oil and Gas Information System
Mission
The primary goal of the Empire
State Oil and Gas Information System is to provide its users with
access to all of New York's publicly available oil and gas data. In
addition to providing access to publicly available data, our intention
is to make the ESOGIS your complete resource for oil and gas data
in the State of New York.
Our responsibilities in the Reservoir Characterization Group at the New York State Museum are not solely
to maintain New York's collection of oil and gas data (paper files, logs, samples, well core etc.),
but also to perform and promote the research of New York's potential for oil and gas development and
storage.
We are continually creating maps and using software such as ArcGIS, GeoGraphix and Petra to
develop projects for various areas throughout the state. Currently this information is only
being used by us here in the Reservoir Characterization Group, however it is our goal to make
much of this information available through the ESOGIS in the near future.
We are currently working closely with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to ensure that the ESOGIS always contains
the most accurate and up-to-date information available. In addition to our co-operation with
the DEC, funding has been contributed to this project by NYSERDA and Fortuna Energy Inc.
Current Status
Currently the ESOGIS allows you to query New York's oil and gas wells and view
the results in tabular or detailed formats. You may create personal projects with wells
selected from your query results and then perform mass downloads for only those wells
within your project. Data available for download currently includes general well information,
production data, and formation tops.
Also available for download, on an individual well basis, are paper files(permits, completion reports,
transfer information etc.), rasterized well logs, and digital well logs for both deep
(those reaching Trenton and below) and shallow wells.
Future Plans
We are currently developing a core picture library that will be accessible
by all members. We are also developing a mapping module that will allow you
to map your query results and access all available data for the selected
wells. Our goal is to allow you to create and download simple maps
with layers such as local geology, municipalities, and transportation
routes.
Other Services
In addition to the ESOGIS, we provide other services here at the NYSM
such as custom map production and "canned" project development for software
such as ArcGIS, Geographix and Petra. Please Contact Us
for more information.
Development of The ESOGIS is overseen by the Reservoir Characterization Group at The New York State Museum with
