Historical Note

In the early 1820's William Hart of Fredonia, New York is said to have dug the first commercial natural gas well. The gas was piped to a local inn. Mr. Hart discovered a good flow of gas at a depth of 27 feet in what is now known as Devonian Shale.

In the mid 1860's Job Moses of Bolivar, New York is said to have drilled the first producing oil well in New York State. Mr. Moses' well "Job Moses No. 1" was located about 30 miles west of Bolivar in Limestone at a depth of 1050 feet.It produced seven barrels a day.
